Listen to the story of Peteyville
|
Happy Holidays and welcome to Peteyville, the home of Pete, Tina and Peter Basala.
Peteyville was established in 1987 with just a few strands of Chasing lights outlining the house. Over the years it certainly has grown! In 1992 Pete designed and built the Ferris Wheel which quickly drew a lot of attention. That is when Pete realized that people like to see things move! The Ferris Wheel you see today is the second design. It is hard to believe what started out with a wooden Ferris Wheel and a few yard decorations has grown to what it is today! Each year hundreds of people visit Peteyville. Some have told us that their children make them drive by every evening. Peteyville is lit from Thanksgiving until New Years Eve from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Hours are extended for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Over the years Pete has won several decorating contests. He even designed a contest for the Northwest Indiana Times in 1993. Pictures of Peteyville are a part of hundreds of family Christmas photos, families we have never met. It is truly a pleasure to see the excitement of the children as they dance to the Christmas music playing outside. A few years ago Pete added the Teeter Totter, and the Teddy Bears. In 2005 the 7? Christmas Stocking at the peak of the house, the giant teddy bear in the gift box and the archway along the sidewalk were added. Since he was running out of yard, he decided to make the roof and the sides of the house do something interesting! For 2006 the number of arches have been doubled and put in motion! Also new for 2006 is a website, www.peteyville.net and a radio broadcast on 92.7FM. You can see pictures of Peteyville ? the early years ? on our website. Currently there are over 20 air blown characters in the display. The air blown carousel & a 12? snow globe that were added for 2006. There are well over 500 strands of C9 & C7 lights in the display. Every year approximately 300 light bulbs have to be replaced. If you ever wondered who bought all the lights at Menards ? now you know! Pete is most proud of his Leg Lamp that is proudly displayed in the bay window. Every year when the Leg Lamp is carefully put into place, Pete goes across the street and exclaims, ?You should see it from here!? Pete purchased the certified replica from Leg Lamps.com in 1999. He was the first in the area to purchase an authentic Leg Lamp. The Leg Lamp has significant meaning to this neighborhood . Jean Shephard grew up on Cleveland Street which is 3 streets from our home. Warren G. Harding School is also just a few blocks away. Pete also has fond memories of going to downtown Hammond, referred to as downtown Hohman, to watch the Christmas parade. Just like Ralphie, Pete remembers pressing his nose up to the windows at Goldblatts while Ralphie was in the window at Higbees. The lamp was borrowed for the Grand Opening of the Jean Shepphard Memorial in 2004 and is autographed by 4 of the actors from the movie. Flick, Scott Farcus, Randy and Schwartz. Pictures of the grand opening ceremony and autographing the lamp shade are available on www.peteyville.net Peteyville is powered by a separate service from NIPSCO. It is a 200 AMP service with a multitude of relay?s, timers and underground wiring that Pete has engineered. Good thing it is wired from HIS garage, not MY house! It just isn?t Christmas until I see Pete get 110 volts shot through him at least once every year! The electric meter can also double as a meat slicer! We would like to thank our neighbors on each side who have graciously allowed us to use their yard. Now if I just could not convince them to let me ?borrow? some outlets! Merry Christmas and thank you for visiting Peteyville. |
